Argentina: First Impressions Of Maradona's Albiceleste

Just one game into his international managerial career and Diego Maradona is already just two wins away from equalling the number of victories he managed during 23 games as a club coach in the mid-nineties.

Argentina's 1-0 win over Scotland on Wednesday was a positive beginning to what is sure to be an interesting couple of years, and although the match wasn't able to live up to the pre-match hype, it did offer an fascinating insight into what we can expect from El Diego's Albiceleste.

The absences of Juan Roman Riquelme and Lionel Messi all but forced Argentina into playing without a player in the classic number ten role for the first time in recent memory, and the lack of such a player allowed Maradona to experiment with a more fluid attacking approach.

There were shades of last season's Manchester United to the Argentine attack in the first half, as Ezequiel Lavezzi drifted left, Carlos Tevez dropped off the front and Maxi Rodriguez took advantage of the space created by their movements to drive beyond the two nominated front-men and provide a goal threat from the right.

Tevez clearly had a point to prove after his recent struggles to hold down a regular first-team place at United, and gave an all action performance on his way to the Man of the Match award. With Sergio Aguero and Messi still to come into contention, he will have to continue in a similar vein if he wants to make himself indispensable in the lead up to the World Cup.

Javier Mascherano had initially been sceptical about taking on the captain's armband following Maradona's appointment, but on Wednesday's evidence he will make the perfect 'lead-by-example' captain, as he and Fernando Gago combined to provide an almost impenetrable wall in front of the back four. The defensive midfield pair also distributed the ball superbly, setting up many attacks with their excellent range of passing.

Jonas Gutierrez offered little in the attacking third, save his assist for the goal, but worked hard to neuter the attacking threat of Alan Hutton and could prove valuable to Maradona in a similar role when the opposition requires it. Against weaker adversaries, Benfica's Angel Di Maria is more likely to get the nod.

Emiliano Papa had a generally impressive debut at left-back, getting forward on a more regular basis than Gabriel Heinze usually does in the same role, although he wasn't really afforded the opportunity to show the quality of his left-foot delivery in the final-third.

Javier Zanetti still has energy for days at right-back, but is likely to see his position come under threat from San Lorenzo's Marcos Angeleri when the World Cup qualifiers resume next March, especially if Maradona wishes to dispose of some of the old guard and mould his own side.

Despite the positives that he will take from Wednesday's victory, Maradona will still be concerned over the few moments of defensive uncertainty that were on display, especially in the second half. Such indecision has already cost Argentina a number of points during the qualification process, and Maradona will be keen to get to the root of the problem as soon as possible.

Juan Pablo Carrizo is a solid goalkeeper, but lacks the authority to be the boss of his penalty area. Combine that with the sometimes poor decision making of Gabriel Heinze and Martin Demichelis and you have a potential recipe for disaster - something that Argentina can ill-afford if they are to be serious contenders in 2010.

Daniel Diaz and Fabricio Coloccini are often too rash in the challenge to be an international regulars and so it is probable that the likes of Nicolas Pareja of Espanyol and Villarreal's Gonzalo Rodriguez will get a chance to impress in Argentina's friendly against France in February, although the centre-back roles are pretty much wide-open at this point in time.

The situation is just as uncertain on the goalkeeping side. Roberto Abbondanzieri is becoming more error-prone as the years go on, Oscar Ustari has thus-far failed to usurp him at club level, and although Sergio Romero has made a solid start to life in the Netherlands with AZ, at 21 he may be considered too young to be chucked straight into the full national side.

Putting defensive issues aside, there are still a number of questions that need to be answered in the coming months. What role does Riquelme have to play in Maradona's Argentina? Is there really a need for a classic target man? Is there a place for Pablo Aimar? Will Andres D'Alessandro re-enter the fold?... etc, etc.

It has certainly been an encouraging start for the Maradona regime, but it is not until we get down to the business of World Cup qualification in March that he can be properly judged. Once he gets his coaching staff together and has some time with the players we will then see the true path on which he intends to take Argentina.

Wherever that is, it is sure to be compelling.

Brazil: Denilson Determined To Make It At Arsenal

In an interview with Brazilian sports daily Placar, Arsenal midfielder Denilson has asserted that he is determined to hold down his current first-team slot in North London and hopes that success at international level will follow in the near future.

Denilson, 20, moved to Arsenal from Sao Paulo in 2006 with a big reputation, having captained Brazil at every level he had appeared for them at. After spending a year bedding into English football, he was expecting to play a more prominent role last season, and admits that he was frustrated by his lack of playing time.

"I did not have much stimulation to train.

"I thought about asking for a loan move or a return to Brazil. Here in England, all alone, with the weather and everything... it was hard."

This season has been the polar opposite for Denilson, as the departures of Mathieu Flamini and Gilberto Silva over the summer have given him the chance to get a decent run going in the first team. Having got a taste of regular football, Denilson is now ready to establish himself at Arsenal, and hopes that international recognition will follow.

"I want to make history here," he explained.

"Clearly I want to play for Brazil, but I must play well here to make the squad on merit... I feel that it is very close."

Unlike many of his team-mates, Denilson prefers to avoid the bright lights of London, and is in the process of buying a house in Hertfordshire, just a short drive from Arsenal's training ground. None of his family accompanied him to England, and he prefers to stay focused on football, rather than letting other distractions enter his head.

"I decided in my mind that I had to do this alone... that was the only way I felt I would be able to succeed," he concluded.

Brazil: Nilmar Linked With Real Madrid Move

Internacional striker Nilmar is one of a number of South American players to be linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in January following the news that Ruud van Nistelrooy will be out of action for at least six months with a knee injury.

Nilmar endured a tough year at Lyon in 2004/05 in his only previous foray into European football, but the 24 year old bounced back well from that disappointment and may feel that the time is right to give Europe another try.

With the Brazilian season coming to a close in December, Internacional would likely be keen to listen to offers for the striker, and for Madrid he would prove to be a cheaper option than the likes of Diego Milito, upon whom Genoa have slapped a €50 million-plus price tag.

Inter Milan castoff Hernan Crespo is currently looking like one of the frontrunners to replace van Nistelrooy, as he has both the necessary experience and would be available for a nominal fee due to his recent inactivity at the San Siro under Jose Mourinho.

CSKA Moscow's Vagner Love and Zaragoza striker Ricardo Oliveira have also been linked to the Spanish champions, but are unlikely to be seen as first choice options due to concerns over their attitudes.

Copa Sudamericana: Internacional beat Chivas; All Square in Argentina [Goals Video]

Internacional took a massive step towards reaching their first ever Copa Sudamericana final with a 2-0 victory away to Mexican side Chivas Guadalajara on Wednesday.

Chivas wasted a number of good chances - Omar Arellano guilty of the worst miss midway through the first half - and were made to pay, as excellent strikes in the last twenty minutes from Nilmar and Alex secured Internacional a healthy advantage going into the second leg next Wednesday.

Argentinos Juniors and Estudiantes played out a 1-1 draw in the second semi-final on Thursday, leaving their tie wide open ahead of the return leg next week.

Agustín Alayes gave Estudiantes a first half lead when he headed home Leandro Benitez's corner in the 26th minute, but the home side were quick to react following the half-time interval as Juan Mercier found the back of the net to level the score on the night.

Argentina: Ortega Open To River Return

Ariel Ortega has suggested that he would be happy to return to River Plate following the resignation of Diego Simeone, but insisted that club president José María Aguilar would have the final say in any move.

Simeone lost patience with Ortega, 34, after the playmaker missed a number of training sessions for various reasons, some of which were linked to his ongoing alcoholism. Ortega was banished from the River squad for the Apertura tournament and eventually signed for second division side Independiente Rivadavia.

With Simeone having now departed, the path could be clear for Ortega to make a return to El Monumental, but he knows that a possible return is out of his hands.

"Aguilar will be the one who decides whether or not I can return," he told Radio La Red.

"The fans can request things, but the leaders may not listen to them."

Mexico: Chivas Set To Loan Nery Castillo

Chivas Guadalajara are set to sign Shakhtar Donetsk forward Nery Castillo to a short-term loan contract as cover for the remainder of their Mexican Apertura and Copa Sudamericana campaigns.

Castillo, 24, has been using Chivas' training facilities in an attempt to regain fitness ahead of Mexico's vital World Cup Qualifier against Honduras next Wednesday after being frozen out at Manchester City, with whom he is on currently on loan from Shaktar.

Chivas' vice president Nestor de la Torre confirmed that they had reached an agreement to sign Castillo until the end of the year, and that he would take to the field as soon as the necessary paperwork is completed.

Castillo will not be eligible for the first leg of Chivas' Copa Sudamericana semi-final against Internacional of Brazil on Wednesday, and will miss the second leg on international duty, but would be available for the two-legged final should Chivas progress.

Argentina: Rodriguez Takes Temporary Charge At River

River Plate youth team coach Gabriel Rodriguez will take charge of the first team until the end of the Apertura tournament following the resignation of Diego Simeone, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

Rodriguez conducted training for the first time on Tuesday morning as he began preparations for River's weekend tie away to Independiente, but had to do so without Leonardo Ponzio, who will miss the remainder of the campaign with a metatarsal fracture picked up against Huracan on Sunday.

River are simply looking to restore pride in their remaining five Apertura fixtures, as they currently sit rock bottom with only ten points from the fourteen games played thus far.

America Gallego, Diego Cagna and Nery Pumpido are among the candidates to take over as coach on a full-time basis, although Rodriguez could bring himself into play if he can get the team ticking in the final month of the Apertura.

Argentina: Di Maria To Miss Scotland Friendly

Benfica wide-man Angel Di Maria looks set to miss out on Diego Maradona's debut as Argentina coach after picking up an injury in his side's 2-0 Uefa Cup defeat to Galatasary last Thursday.

Di Maria completed the ninety minutes, but was unable to train the next day and will now be out of action for at least the next couple of weeks, ruling him out of the friendly clash with Scotland on the 19th November.

The former Rosario Central winger successfully staked his claim for a full international place with some excellent performances during Argentina's run to Olympic gold over the summer and will be disappointed not to be involved in the first game under the new regime.

Maradona will presumably announce a replacement for the twenty year old in the coming days, with a number of domestic based players still hoping to receive a call-up in time for next Wednesday's fixture.

Argentina: Maradona Gives Hope To Higuain and Others

New Argentina coach Diego Maradona has insisted that he is keeping tabs on a number of potential national team call-ups despite naming a fairly conservative squad for his first game in charge.

Maradona's selection for the friendly against Scotland on the 19th November bore a striking resemblance to the squads picked by former coach Alfio Basile, with seemingly little done to ease Argentina's recent problems up front.

Gonzalo Higuain almost single handedly dragged Real Madrid to a 4-3 victory over Malaga at the weekend with a four goal salvo, and Maradona suggested that he and others will get a chance to prove themselves during his reign.

"I am watching a lot of matches and if they can continue their current form at club level then the likes of Diego Milito, Gonzalo Higuaín, Mauro Zárate... these players will have opportunities," he told Radio la Red.

The international future of Juan Roman Riquelme has been up for debate in recent times, and Maradona admits that he needs to speak with the Boca Juniors playmaker before making a decision on whether or not to include him in his plans for the Scotland game.

"I must talk with Roman to see if he wants to be part of the team... we know that Roman has played a lot of games recently, so it is important that I speak with him first," he explained.

Brazil: Alipio 'The New C.Ronaldo' Prefers The Fenômeno

Real Madrid's new Brazilian forward Alípio Duarte Brandão has revealed that his idol is former Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan striker Ronaldo.

Madrid moved quickly to secure the signature of Alipio, 16, from Portuguese club Rio Ave, with Chelsea and a number of other big European clubs said to have been eyeing the Brasilia-born forward.

Alipio will arrive in Spain with his agent Helder Daniel to finalise the details of his contract next Monday and will start to train with Madrid's Castilla youth side by the end of next week.

With a move to Madrid secured at such an early age, Alipio now has his sights set on replicating the achievements of Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima, who scored over eighty goals in his five year spell at the Bernabeu.

"I know that Ronaldo played for Real Madrid and it would be amazing if I could reach his level. He is my idol," he told Globo Esporte.

Journalists have dubbed Alipio the 'new Ronaldo' in reference to the current Manchester United winger, and the youngster would certainly appear to share some characteristics with the Portuguese international if his self-assessment is anything to go by.

"My main strengths are technical ability, pace and the capacity to make and score goals," he affirmed.

Madrid have paid €550,000 to Rio Ave to secure Alipio's services and are likely to consider that fee a bargain if he does manage to live up to his potential over the coming years.

Brazil: Sao Paulo Maintain Narrow Lead Into Final Stretch [Goals Video]

An 88th minute winner from Ze Luis ensured that Sao Paulo maintained their two point lead at the top of the Brazilian Championship with a 3-2 win over relegation threatened Portuguesa on Saturday.

Muricy Ramalho's side led twice, only to be pegged back on both occasions by the plucky home team, but there was nothing that Portuguesa could do when Ze Luis headed Sao Paulo ahead for the third time with just two minutes left to play.

Gremio kept themselves firmly in contention for the championship with a 1-0 victory away to fellow title hopefuls Palmeiras on Sunday. Tcheco scored the winning goal when his free-kick eluded everyone to nestle in the far corner of the net with just over quarter of an hour left to play.

Cruzeiro's 1-0 victory against Fluminense saw them jump ahead of Palmeiras on goal difference, four points off the leaders, while Kleberson kept Flamengo within range with a late winner away to Botafogo.

At the other end of the table, Vasco da Gama pulled themselves out of the drop zone with a 1-0 win over Santos, courtesy of a penalty from Edmundo, and Atletico Paranaense came out on top in their relegation six-pointer against Figueirense.

Vasco da Gama 1-0 Santos
Figueirense 0-2 Atletico Paranaense
Portuguesa 2-3 Sao Paulo
Cruzeiro 1-0 Fluminense
Coritiba 0-0 Nautico Recife
Palmeiras 0-1 Gremio
Sport Recife 2-1 Goias
Botafogo 0-1 Flamengo
Internacional 4-0 Ipatinga
Vitoria 0-1 Atletico Belo Horizonte

Argentina: Boca and San Lorenzo Continue Battle For Apertura [Goals Video]

Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo continue to share top spot in the Argentine Apertura following late winners in Round 14, while Diego Simeone signed off his River Plate coaching career in style with a six-goal thriller at El Monumental on Sunday.

Juan Roman Riquelme was Boca's hero once more - having scored the winning goal against San Lorenzo in Round 13 - as he curled home at superb last-minute free-kick to give Los Xeneizes a 1-0 victory away to Arsenal de Sarandi.

San Lorenzo bounced back from their defeat to Boca with a 2-1 victory over Gimnasia de Jujuy at the Estadio Pedro Bidegain. Gonzalo Bergessio scored the winner seven minutes from time after Pablo Calandria had equalised Aureliano Torres' early second-half strike for the home side.

Tigre dropped two points off the pace at the top of the table after they could only manage a 2-2 draw with ten men Colon de Santa Fe, while Lanus moved up to fourth as goals from Diego Lagos and Jose Sand saw them come from behind to win away to Rosario Central.

Mauro Boselli continued his rich vein of form by scoring the only goal of the game in Estudiantes' 1-0 defeat of Independiente, moving the former Boca striker up to fifth in the top goalscorer race.

Despite the late drama in the games involving the major title contenders, it was the game between bottom side River Plate and Huracan that proved to be the most entertaining of the weekend.

Diego Simeone's reign at River looked to be coming to an embarrassing end as his side went into the break 3-0 down, but second half strikes from Matias Abelairas, Radamel Falcao and Eduardo Tuzzio brought the home side back to 3-3, restoring a least a little pride for the departing coach.

Rosario Central 1-2 Lanus
Banfield 2-1 Newell's Old Boys
Colon de Santa Fe 2-2 Tigre
Godoy Cruz 1-1 Argentinos Juniors
Velez Sarsfield 0-2 Gimnasia la Plata
Estudiantes 1-0 Independiente
San Lorenzo 2-1 Gimnasia de Jujuy
Arsenal 0-1 Boca Juniors
San Martin 0-2 Racing Club
River Plate 3-3 Huracan

Brazil: Romario Wants Ronaldo At Flamengo

Brazilian striking legend Romario has indicated that he would love to see Ronaldo pull on the shirt of Flamengo during an interview with Brazilian sports paper 'Globoesporte'.

Romario left Barcelona to join Flamengo in 1995 and enjoyed another two spells at the Rubro-Negro during the nineties, sandwiched between his time in Spain with Valencia. He admits that the club still holds a special place in his heart.

"I identify myself closely with the supporters of Flamengo," he explained.

"I played there for five years and had a great time."

With Ronaldo making progress in his return from a career threatening knee injury, Romario believes that it would be a great coup for Flamengo and the Brazilian league in general if they could sign the three-time world player of the year.

"He is an expensive player, but like the fans of Flamengo I think it would be great to see a player of his talent in our football, especially in Rio," he affirmed.

During his playing days, Romario was notorious for his off the field activities and his general dislike of training. He was asked his opinion on Adriano and Ronaldinho - two players that appear to share these same traits.

"Everyone knows that I have always had two sides. I did what I wanted, but I could always be counted upon on match day.

"They have the right to make the best of their lives, but also have a duty to arrive on the pitch and give their best.

"I believe they are still players that can prove valuable to Brazil," he concluded.

Brazil: Arsenal Agree Pre-Contract Deal With Lenny

Reports in the Brazilian media suggest that Arsenal have agreed a pre-contract deal with Palmeiras forward Lenny that will see the twenty year old join the North London side on a free transfer in January.

Lenny's Palmeiras contract is due to expire at the end of the Brazilian season in December, and Arsenal are said to have sent a fax to the Sao Paulo side, making them aware of the agreement that they have in place with him.

Should the reports prove to be true, then it is anticipated that Lenny will be farmed out on loan upon his January arrival as it is highly unlikely that Arsenal would be able to make a case for him to receive a British work permit at this stage in his career.

Salamanca would be his probable destination, as Arsenal have a deal in place with the Spanish second division side to house non-EU players until they are able to apply for Spanish citizenship.

Arsene Wenger has been keeping track of the forward for a couple of years and was linked with a £3million move when Lenny was plying his trade for Fluminense in 2007. The youngster has made 12 appearances for Palmeiras in the 2008 Brazilian Championship, but has yet to find the back of the net.

Argentina: Americo Gallego Heads Race To Replace Simeone At River Plate

Americo Gallego has emerged as the man most likely to replace Diego Simeone as coach of River Plate according to reports in the Argentine media.

Simeone resigned on Friday following his side's elimination from the Copa Sudamericana at the hands of Chivas. River are likely to have a temporary coach in place until the end of the Apertura, but will want to get a permanent replacement on board in time for the 2009 Clausura.

Gallego is thought to be the favoured choice at boardroom level, with the club wishing to appoint "a man of club," after Simeone failed to connect with supporters during his near one year tenure at El Monumental.

The 53 year old enjoyed seven successful years as a River Plate player in the eighties, and has coached the side on two previous occasions, winning Argentine titles in 1994 and 2000. Gallego is currently out of work after being sacked by Mexican side UANL Tigres in February and would be likely to jump at the chance to take the reigns at Los Millonairos.

Club America coach Ramon Diaz is the clear supporters choice for the role according to a poll conducted by Infobae.com, coming out with 41% of the vote, but lacks support at boardroom level after he rejected River's advances this time last year to remain at San Lorenzo.

River Plate playing legend Enzo Francescoli has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, although he is unlikely to leave his business interests in order to take up the role, whilst Daniel Passarella - the man replaced by Simeone a year ago - has been linked with an unlikely return in some quarters.

Brazil: Robinho "I Can Be Best In The World At City"

Brazilian superstar Robinho believes that he can prove himself to be the best player in the world at Manchester City following his transfer deadline-day move from Real Madrid.

The 24 year old has enjoyed a generally positive start to his career at the Eastlands, scoring six goals, including a hat-trick against Stoke, and providing a number of assists for his team-mates.

In an interview with Brazilian sports paper Placar, Robinho indicated that he is happy with the start he has made in the Premier League.

"It has gone well… I have a good scoring average for someone who is not a number nine.

"I want to score more goals, but, if team-mates are in better positions, then I am happy to provide assists as they are just as important to the team."

Many have questioned his move to City, especially considering that he left Real Madrid in order to join them, but Robinho believes that the Eastlands will provide him with the perfect stage upon which to display his talent to the world.

"I can definitely achieve my objectives here, and I will," he affirmed.

"Many people will say it is difficult to do so at a team like this, but I believe it to be easier because I am the focal point here. At Madrid, I was only used for the important games."

Robinho joined a burgeoning Brazilian contingent at City when he agreed to spearhead the Abu Dhabi revolution and he believes that striker Jô can be a national team regular if he maintains his current fine form.

"Jô is playing very well. If he continues to improve then he is certain to be part of the squad for the 2010 World Cup," he explained.

The City supporters have taken Robinho in with open arms since his €42.5million move and the forward admitted that he is slightly overwhelmed by the strength of the positive reaction he has received.

"It has been amazing; they treat me like Maradona here.

"It is slightly embarrassing, but I hope to repay their faith with my performances on the pitch," he concluded.

Under 20s: Peru Dropped As South American Youth Championship Hosts

The South American Football Confederation (CSF) announced on Friday that Peru have lost the right to host the 2009 South American U-20 Championships due to an ongoing power struggle inside the Peruvian Football Association (FPF).

The government of Peru's Institute of Sports (IPD) does not recognise Manuel Burga as the head of the FPF, and the dispute is causing massive problems for Peru, with FIFA threatening action if the issue is not resolved in the near future.

CSF spokesman Nestor Benitez confirmed Venezuela as the new hosts for the tournament that is due to take place in January 2009 - the nation having proven their credentials with the successful hosting of last year's Copa America. The 2009 tournament will mark the fifth occasion on which they have hosted the U-20 Championship.

Chile: Villarreal Look To Extend Pellegrini Stay Until 2011

Spanish side Villarreal are set to offer their Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini a new one year extension to his contract, taking him through until the summer of 2011.

Pellegrini, 55, led Villarreal to a hugely impressive second place finish in La Liga last season - a position that they currently occupy this time around, sitting just one point off leaders Barcelona.

With qualification from their Champions League group looking all but assured, Villarreal are understandably keen to extend Pellegrini's current deal, which runs until the end of next season.

A number of big European clubs are said to be considering a move for the highly-rated coach, and the Yellow Submarine will want to tie him down to another year as soon as possible in order to ward off such interest.

Argentina: Simeone Resigns As River Plate Coach

Diego Simeone will take charge of River Plate for the last time when they face Huracan at El Monumental on Sunday after tendering his resignation following their Copa Sudamericana defeat to Chivas on Thursday.

River currently sit bottom of the Argentine Apertura with just six games left to play having endured their worst ever start to a campaign, and with the chance of a continent-wide trophy now gone, Simeone's reign will come to an end less than one year after he took charge.

Simeone led River to the Clausura title after replacing Daniel Passarella at the end of last year, but was unable to mount a serious challenge for the Copa Libertadores, dropping out at the hands of San Lorenzo in the round of sixteen. Pressure has been mounting on him following River's poor recent form, but the club board were keen for him to remain in charge, at least until the end of the Apertura.

However, Simeone has elected to carry through with his resignation following a meeting with club president Jose Maria Aguilar and sporting director Rodolfo Cuiña on Friday, leaving the club in search of a new coach to lead them forward into the 2009 Clausura.

"We had not really looked at other options as we were convinced he would stay," Cuiña told reporters when the news of Simeone's resignation broke.

"On Monday we will appoint a temporary coach as we believe this to be the most practical solution at this time," he affirmed.
